Stop Animal Cruelty in the U.S.

Animal abuse is the deliberate, physical abuse to an animal. Animal neglect is the failure or lack-of taking care of an animal. Anti-cruelty laws exist in all states and prohibit unnecessary killing, beating, neglecting, and abandonment. Currently there are forty-seven states in the U.S who treat some forms of animal abuse has a felony. Cases involving animal cruelty may be investigated by the local SPCA, humane society, or police department. If there is enough evidence unfolded at the time of the investigation to prosecute; charges may be filed by the local district or states attorney office.

How to recognize Animal Cruelty

*An animal living without shelter in extreme weather

*An animal with visible bones and lethargy could be a sign of an untreated medical condition or starvation.

*An animal with untreated wounds

*An animal who shows signs of physical distress such as limping.

What to do if you witness animal cruelty

If you suspect or witness abuse, contact your local animal control department or the humane society. Make sure to have documented has many details possible such as the date, time, and location where the abuse took place. If you can give the names of others who witnessed the abuse it will help to build a stronger case against the abuser.

People who abuse animals

People with emotional problems have been known to hit, stab, shot, or set animals on fire. These people are likely to commit violent crimes against humans also. Seventy percent of animal abusers have been convicted of other crimes. Thirteen percent of intended animal abuse cases also involves domestic violence. Sixty-eight percent of battered women had experienced violence towards their animals by the subject who abused them. Animal abuse investigations often open the door for a social service intervention for a family that could possibly be in trouble. Abusers may harm, kill, or threaten a child's pet to coerce them into sexual abuse or to have them remain silent. Abused children may kill or harm animals as a form of aggression from their mental state.

At the hands of abusers, pets will suffer from permanent disabilities, injuries, continuous health problems, and death. Please be a voice for these animals who cannot speak for theirselves.
